Anglicans May Split Over God's View of Sodomy

Issue Date: September/October 2008

Every ten years, the largest "Protestant Denomination" meets to discuss the issues in their "communion." This year, it is time for the 77-million-member Anglican Church to meet again. Anglican is the official state church of Great Britain. The American branch is called Episcopalians.

There are also branches in Africa and other parts of the world. It is not a tight hierarchy like Roman Catholicism, but a loosely linked group of bishops and archbishops headed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.

Their once-every-ten-years meeting is called the Lambeth conference after the city where they meet in the University of Kent. Ten years ago, discussions were dominated by sex; specifically homosexuality and ordination of women. This year, one-fourth of the invited delegates representing almost half of the world-wide Anglican members chose to not attend, in objection to the ordination of an openly practicing sodomite bishop by the Episcopal branch in the U.S.

The battle has been raging even before 2003 when V. Gene Robinson, was ordained in New Hampshire. The media reports that it is a possible pending schism (split) in the church between "progressives," who choose to find nothing wrong with sodomy in their bibles, and "conservatives" who claim that God placed clear objections into Scripture.

Satan is gleeful that he can create such confusion among those who "name the name of Christ," seriously damaging our witness to the world. Unfortunately, Satan got some help from the translators of the modern Bible versions.

Modern sodomites like to point to 1 Kings 14:24 and 15:12 where "sodomites" (KJV) is translated "male shrine prostitutes" (NIV, Holman) "perverted persons" (NKJV) "male cult prostitutes" (Holman), and "shrine prostitutes" (NLT). They say: "See! We are not shrine prostitutes. This is not talking about us."

Or they will go to 1 Corinthians 6:9. The KJV targets the "effeminate," or "abusers of themselves with mankind." But the NIV comes up with "male prostitutes" again, and "homosexual offenders." "That`s not us! We are homosexual but not "offenders," they say.

This pick-and-choose approach is simply dishonest.  If they really wanted to know God`s opinion, they would also look at Leviticus 18:22; 20:13, Romans 1:26-27, Rev. 21:8, where even the modern translations are brilliantly clear. However, if all were reading the same Bible, there would be much less room for excuses.

So, what`s the main issue? It really comes down to the question: "Did God keep His promise?" In several places in scripture, God specifically promises to preserve His words. (See Psalms 12:6-7, Matthew 24:35, Mark 13:31, and Luke 21:33.) In fact, He pronounces dire curses on anyone who adds to or takes away from His words. (See Deuteronomy 4:2, 12:32, Proverbs 30:5-6 and Revelation 22:18-19.)

How then, is it possible for 70 million people to waste so much time quibbling over God`s opinion about this subject? He made it very clear to those who "have ears to hear." To those who will not hear, He promises to give them over to a "reprobate mind" and goes on to define the evils of such a mind that lead to death. (See Romans 1:28-32.)

We cheer the 35 million Anglicans who have drawn a line against this perversion of both sex and the scripture. We can only pray that they will also come to understand that the KJV is God`s preserved words in English and eliminate such confusion.
