KJV's Built-in Dictionary Helps Prisoner Jump-Start His Education

Gregory Bruner found himself in a Florida prison, serving a ten-year sentence for manslaughter. But he wasn't the same man that he was when he committed the crime that sent him there.

Shortly after getting in trouble with the law, Bruner met the one Person who could change his messed-up life—Jesus Christ. By the time he worked his way through the justice system, and reached prison, he had been a Christian for six months. He didn't know much about the Lord, but he knew John 3:16 and he knew the blood of Jesus had cleansed him of his sins.

The Florida Department of Corrections tested Bruner, along with the other new inmates, to determine their reading level. His score was grade level 6.5. Bruner knew he had to do something with his life, so he asked to be put in school in the prison to get his high school diploma. He spent 2-1/2 years on a waiting list, hoping for an education.

But Bruner didn't sit idly and wait. As a new convert, he had a King James Bible, so he prayed, "Oh God, your Word is my guide, so help me to read and understand it." Then he began to read.

After 2-1/2 years, Bruner finally got his chance to enter the prison school program. They tested him the first day of school. He hoped that by now he might score 8.5 or even 9.0. But he recalls how he could hardly believe his eyes when he read his score: 12.9. Told that his reading score was too high for him to be in school, Bruner took the GED test, passing with the third highest score out of 25 inmates.

Don't bother trying to convince Gregory Bruner that the King James Bible is too hard to read. He knows all too well that the classic English text of the KJV, coupled with the power of the Holy Spirit, jump-started his education and changed his life!

Gail Riplinger, in her newest book, "Language of the King James Bible," explains how this occurs. The King James Bible contains God's built-in dictionary, along with several other key characteristics that educate its reader. Riplinger describes how its vocabulary and reading level slowly build progressively from Genesis to Revelation.
