Mainline 'Churches' Splitting Over Same-Sex Marriage

It is heartening to see that some in the “main line” churches are waking up to the infiltration of pro-homosexual leadership. Recent articles indicate that some 1800 churches have split from the United Methodist conferences and formed a more biblical grouping.

The Episcopalians have suffered a decline of nearly 400,000 members since 2012. A mass exodus began to occur after the ordination in 2003 of Gene Robinson, the first openly homosexual Bishop.

The Church of England (Anglican) recently came out with a plan to bless same sex couples. In response, 2000 Anglican church leaders signed a new declaration opposing the decision. These decisions are particularly significant in view of the fact that there are 85 million Anglicans in 165 countries.

So, how can there be so much confusion when the Bible clearly condemns any sex other than between a married man and woman? Of course, part of it is a twisting of the biblical concept of love. Emotional attraction is not a license to ignore God’s law. In fact, God calls it lust instead of love.

It is partly the result of a pick-and-choose interpretation of the Bible. They largely ignore Romans 1:26-27 and Leviticus 18:22. They highlight Ezekiel 16:49-50 claiming that the sin of Sodom was lack of hospitality, ignoring the context that speaks of them doing abominations that brought God’s judgment.

The newer Bible versions also water down the scriptures such as 1 Kings 14:24, 15:12, 22:46 and 2 Kings 23:7, where the KJV term “sodomites” is translated temple or cult prostitutes. Homosexuals point to this change and claim that that does not include them.

Some leaders have questioned whether these churches should even use the word “church” since they so blatantly ignore the scriptures that are the foundation for Christ’s church. But the Bible predicted this kind of apostasy and encouraged the true believers to stand up for the truth.

Historically, gospel literature has played a major role in calling the church back to truth. Today, we have a great responsibility in that area. The tools are there and we will surely be judged if we fail to use them effectively.
