One of the stories that came out of the recent World Economic Forum was a remark by a European Commission official that laws against hate speech would soon be coming to the United States. Věra Jourová, a Czech politician and lawyer who is the Vice President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency, was speaking of laws against “illegal hate speech” when she said, “which you will have soon also in the US.”

She may have been aware of a law passed recently in the state of New York. In early December of last year, New York State passed the Social Media Hate Speech Accountability Act.

National Review reports that this law:

“Requires any social-media site that operates in New York to set up a public channel via which users can report so-called hate speech and obliges the sites’ owners to respond directly to anyone who uses it. If they refuse, they may be fined up to $1,000 per day.”

This appears to open a very wide door to any user of any social media platform to register a complaint with that site. The user then would expect a prompt response to the complaint from the social media platform. While this does not technically violate the First Amendment, its purpose is to create self-censorship. Platforms then will squelch anything that creates extra work for them, and the users will choose to limit themselves to more acceptable expressions.

Controversial subjects such as the Biblical gospel will create such a firestorm that the platforms will be forced to limit those subjects.

Europeans are farther down the road than we are in putting a legislative lid on what they call hate speech. Their laws demand that the social media platforms become the referees for or against what they call “disinformation.” And of course, the guide rules are not written by anyone who respects the truth of the Bible. Disinformation is defined in very nebulous terms such as “western values,” and “democracy.” It is pretty much whatever the government decides that it means.

There is a worldwide move against this so-called “disinformation.” That term and the other one, “misinformation,” are being substituted for what was once called lies. All are supposedly used to identify anything that is not truth. But today, truth is anybody's idea that they want to promote. Western culture has become a great cauldron of swirling ideologies. But most of them have one thing in common: they hate the Bible and anyone who holds it up as a standard for truth.

There have been many attempts to get around the First Amendment guarantees that we have for freedom of speech. Under current First Amendment jurisprudence, hate speech can only be criminalized when it directly incites imminent criminal activity or consists of specific threats of violence targeted against a person or group. So far, we have enough judges willing to enforce this constitutional guarantee in most cases. But the European lady is convinced that this protection will soon be dismantled.

And Satan is continuing his blitzkrieg against the Bible.

America's freedom of speech has, for a very few hundred years guaranteed that the truth of the Bible could be preached whether it was accepted or not by the hearers. People were free to like what they heard or walk away. All opinions were welcome in the marketplace of ideas.

Now, people don't just walk away in disagreement, they gather a mob and cause such a ruckus that the only choice the police have is to remove the Christian to avoid an uncontrollable riot.
