Secret 4

Mormon doctrine says there are many Gods:

Brigham Young taught that the number of Gods is uncountable.[1]

“...there is an infinite number of holy personages, drawn from worlds without number, who have passed on to exaltation and are thus gods.”[2]

“...you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves... the same as all Gods have done before you.”[3]

Joseph Smith said:

“Hence, the doctrine of a plurality of Gods is as prominent in the Bible as any other doctrine. It is all over the face of the Bible. It stands beyond the power of controversy.[4]

“In the beginning, the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods; and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world and people it.”[5]

“If we should take a million of worlds like this and number their particles, we should find that there are more Gods than there are particles of matter in those worlds.”[6]

“The Gods who dwell in Heaven... have been redeemed from the grave in a world which existed before the foundations of this earth were laid... They were exalted also, from fallen men to Celestial Gods to inhabit their Heaven forever and ever.”[7]

“The celestial beings who dwell in the Heaven... having been filled with all the fulness of these eternal attributes, are called Gods, because the fulness of God dwells in each. Both the males and the females enjoy this fulness.”[8]

“Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45:22)

Secret 5

Mormons believe that men can become Gods:

“As man is, God once was, as God is, man may become.”[9]

“...that man is the offspring of God... having within him the seeds of godhood and thus being a god in embryo...”[10]

“The Lord created you and me for the purpose of becoming Gods like Himself...We are created... to become Gods...”[11]

“...you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves...”[12]

“...man is the king of kings and the lord of lords in embryo.”[13]

“Each one of you has it within the realm of his possibility to develop a kingdom over which you will reside as its king and god.”[14]

“To know God, we must know ourselves. All the personal attributes which are ascribed to God... we find in ourselves... Mormonism does not tend to debase God to the level of man, but to exalt man to the perfection of God.”[15]

“Each command we obey sends us another rung up the ladder to perfected manhood and toward godhood; and every law disobeyed is a sliding toward the bottom where man merges into the brute world.”[16]

“And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.” (Revelation 21:3)

Secret 6

Mormonism says we have to learn how to be Gods:

“Here, then, is eternal life—to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all Gods have done before you, namely, by going from one small degree to another, and from a small capacity to a great one; from grace to grace, from exaltation to exaltation, until you attain to the resurrection of the dead, and are able to dwell in everlasting burnings, and to sit in glory, as do those who sit enthroned in everlasting power.”[17]

What the Bible says:

Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. (Isaiah 44:6)

Secret 7

Mormonism teaches that God was once a man:

“We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will now refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see... he was once a man like us...”[18]

“Remember that God, our heavenly Father, was perhaps once a child, and mortal like we ourselves, and rose step by step in the scale of progress, in the school of advancement; has moved forward and overcome, until He has arrived at the point where He now is.”[19]

“Mormon prophets have continuously taught the sublime truth that God the Eternal Father was once a mortal man who passed through a school of earth life similar to that through which we are now passing. He became God—an exalted being—through obedience to the same eternal Gospel truths that we are given opportunity today to obey... Thus He grew in experience and continued to grow until He attained the status of Godhood. In other words, He became God by absolute obedience to all the eternal laws of the Gospel...”[20]

What the Bible says:

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” (Psalm 90:2)

Secret 8

Mormon doctrine says that God is an exalted man:

“God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens... he was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ himself did; and I will show it from the Bible... The Scriptures say it, and I defy all the learning and wisdom and all the combined powers of earth and hell together to refute it.”[21]

“God himself, the Father of us all, is a glorified, exalted, immortal, resurrected Man!”[22]

“He is our Father—the Father of our spirits, and was once a man in mortal flesh as we are and is now an exalted Being.”[23]

“GOD IS AN EXALTED MAN... our Father in heaven at one time passed through a life and death and is an exalted man.”[24]

“What man is, God has been and what God is, man seeks to become.”[25]

“False creeds teach that God is a spirit essence that fills the immensity of space and is everywhere and nowhere in particular present... God the Father is a glorified and perfected Man, a Personage of flesh and bones...”[26]

What the Bible says:

“...for I am God, and not man...” (Hosea 11:9)
