Jack T. Chick: God's Cartoonist

Jack T. Chick

God's Cartoonist

While Jack Chick was alive, one news reporter claimed that he was likely the most widely read living author, based on over 900 million copies of his gospel tracts printed and distributed.

In 1963, Jack had an idea for a tract that would become the centerpiece of his 200+ titles. It was entitled, "This Was Your Life", one of the most widely read gospel tracts in the history of the world.

Before becoming a full-time cartoonist for the Lord, Jack had a job doing advertising art and other graphic work for an aerospace company in Azusa, California. He used those skills to make a flipchart of “This Was Your Life” and presented it to various churches.

Jack’s original idea for the tract was changed because of a suggestion from a fellow believer. The man was a member of the BGEA, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

He said, “Jack, the story you’re telling is all about this guy’s sinful life and judgment. Why don’t you add a second section about what his life could have been like?” That idea really struck Jack. He quickly wrote a second section and added it at the end of the tract: This can be your life!

One of Jack’s many church presentations.
From the comic book, "Unwanted".

In later 1963 Jack was invited to present the gospel to a group of inmates at a Prison Camp in the mountains above Azusa. Jack decided to try out the tract in flip chart form. Eleven prisoners attended chapel that night. When he finished, nine of them got saved!

So, Jack published the story as his fourth book, "This Was Your Life"

Over the past 50+ years, Chick Publications has received thousands of testimonies from people who said they got saved after reading a Chick tract or had their Biblical perspective helped by what they learned from these tracts. Many tell us they became a pastor or missionary because the tracts helped them find salvation in Christ! Below are a few powerful ones:

"I practiced law for 20 years and kept tracts on the lobby furniture and several on my desk. One day a young flight instructor came in for an appointment. He had financial problems. I shared Christ with him, and he left to go to the airport. On his way out he 'stole' a tract, Holy Joe. When he got to the airport, he had to wait for the mechanic to get the plane gassed up and ready for flight. He intended to take it up as high as he could over Sky Harbor Airport here in Phoenix and then dive into the runway at a 90-degree angle. While waiting for the mechanic to finish his tasks, the flight instructor reached in his pocket and took out the tract. He read it and with a broken spirit accepted Jesus as his Lord."

"In 1978 I read "This Was Your Life" and the prayer in the back, and I’ve been a born-again Christian for 43 years. And I’ve been giving the same tract out, too, for 43 years!"

—D. M., New York

"I have ordered tons of tracts and came into contact with them years ago as a youth. The ones that hit me hardest were "This Was Your Life" and "Somebody Loves Me". Even if a person can't read, they can understand these tracts. I'm a visual reader and learner. They speak better than I can (as my silent witnesses). I love the scriptures footnotes for anyone who wants to verify the scriptures. I can't tell you guys how much these little tracts mean to me, the world, and my ability to minister."

—V. A., Michigan
