I live in Southern California. I see people who have hit hard times. Some are by the road. Some are outside Wal-Mart. Some are in tent cities.

Historically speaking, we have never been so rich. We have technology, transportation, information, all around us (Daniel 12:4). And yet, like Jesus said, we always have the poor among us (John 12:8).

But we all experience crises at one time or another. People have broken hearts, are in despair, have destructive habits hurting them, secret sins to conquer, relationships that have fallen apart. No one is immune. And yet often we conceal them, so others don’t know the pain we feel.

The Big Spender speaks to those conditions, without accusing the reader of being any of them. After all, it’s just a story, right? They can follow along as Jack Chick tells about Howard Madison, who hit it big, then quickly lost it, as people so often do. And now he was desperate.

But money wasn’t his only problem. He also had a broken relationship with his father. Jack wove in the tale of the prodigal son, to bring a lot of emotion into a conclusion that the reader can identify with.

That’s what Chick tracts are for. They give a story that grab the reader, and make sure he or she doesn’t leave without also getting the salvation story. Because no matter whether this life is filled with hard times or good times, it is nothing compared to eternity. Let’s give them the ticket to eternal life and fulfillment forever with the heavenly Father.
