The recent legalization of homosexual sin appears to be only the tip of the iceberg. Recent polls show that public approval of other sins is increasingly wide spread.
The LA Times reports that 51% of adults consider it okay to have a baby out of wedlock. Researcher George Barna found that sexual fantasies, cohabitation, and gambling are all approved by 60% of adults. Thirty to 45 percent approved of abortion, adultery, pornography, drunkenness, and homosexual sex.
Parallel to this trend is the increase in unchurched adults. The number of Americans who do not attend church has grown from 39 million in 1991 to 75 million today. Barna found that unchurched people, particularly young adult males, see church attendance as "both counter-cultural and counter-intuitive."
Even those who stated that they held Christian beliefs failed to demonstrate Bible-based behavior.
Barna found that only 7 percent of the adult population would be considered true evangelical Christians.
Other categories are: 1)non-evangelical born-again Christians who profess faith in Jesus as Savior but doubt accuracy of the Bible, or the need to share their faith, 2)notational Christians who say they are Christians but do not profess faith in Jesus Christ, 3)Non-Christian faiths and 4)atheists and agnostics.
Of the groups, only evangelical Christians stood out against the general culture. All the other's behavior was more often in line with the growing sinfulness in the culture.
Jesus said the gate was narrow that led to life. But we must not just do nothing because of this fact. We are commissioned to witness to those on the wide path who are headed for destruction.
In other research, Barna found that faith beliefs needed to be tied to behavior in early childhood to significantly effect adult lifestyle choices. The homosexuals know that they must win the acceptance of the next generation. That is why they are concentrating their propaganda on school children.
Chick Publications has started the Li'l Suzy series of children's tracts to help counter the culture's lies to them. But sin in the culture must be exposed and God's solution presented. Each new Chick tract is written for this sole purpose. Until the Spirit of God changes the individual hearts, the culture will not change.
Soul winners, we are few, but we have much work to do.
